If you're not sure whether to invest in this book, do it. However, I will say that you need to be ready to read it- you cannot force yourself to want to do the things suggested in this book. I owned it for over 2 years before I got past the first couple of chapters because I just wasn't ready. I battled an eating disorder for almost 30 years, so I understand the struggle all too well. If any book out there puts the struggle down on paper in a concise, yet tender, articulate, and encouraging way, this is it. It speaks exactly what I have felt, and then it uses Scripture to guide my thinking and emotions through each particular facet of the disorder and recovery. This is a book for people who follow OA and the 12 step program but not for people who want to understand why they over eat, to the psychology of it.
This is a really good book but I couldn't get my anorexic sister read it. I read it though and it help me understand the disease.
Of all the books I have read on eating disorders, and I have read many, Laurie's is the most powerful and encouraging by far for me. Written in a beautifully personal, uncomplicated style, you just know Laurie is cheering for you, praying for you, and knows what you are going through. A major element of the book's strength is the liberal reference to Scriptures that tie into why we engage in these destructive eating behaviors, and how God can help us heal - if we let Him. A credentialled counsellor, Laurie has crafted thought-provoking questions in each chapter that brought me to important awareness of my issues and barriers to healing. Unlike another reviewer of this book, I didn't see any connection to OA or the 12 steps. I highly recommend this small, but mighty book for hope and help to overcome eating disorders!
