They Dream in Darkness grabbed my attention from page one and reminded me of Alice Walker's A Color Purple. Turner's riveting novel, based on a true story, was unified by chapter titles and quotations which served as reminders about the power of karma, which gave freedom to the victim turned heroine by her champion, "Ms.Kay."
What an intriguing story! The author did an amazing job of bringing Anna's experiences alive...I was so captivated with the relentles, fast-paced story that I read the book in a day! ...LOVED IT! Phenomenal book....phenomenal author!
This book made me sad, happy, angry, shocked, and every emotion between. It showed the horrific abuses people go through, but it also showed compassion, love, and the healing process. I believe in karma and in some instances of the book, karma prevails.
Hooked by the end of page one... This book is definitely a page turner... You will not want to put it down.
The author captures the reader, so much in fact that Anna becomes your friend... You want to jump in the book & just help her.
You will also quickly realize that your life isn't so bad after all...
This is a spellbinding book. I started it on Monday between appointments and finished it on the train this morning! As a mother and a regular human being, my heart aches that this is a true story! The author does a great job of delivering the story and even in the midst of horrific situations does not leave the reader with raw emotions. She gives the reader hope in humanity!
The narrator sets a fast action pace, sharp and concise, which propels the reader through the story until the end. The omission of particulars such as location, ethnicity or social status transforms this true story from individuality to generality…it could happen to anyone. Evil may come from apparently safe sources but a person‘s awareness of and determination to alleviate another’s suffering could make the difference between life and death. The author has provided us with an eye opener and therefore a must read!
It took me a while to finish, but not because it wasn't good, but because I was a little busy. Once vacation started, I couldn't put it down. At times I questioned was this story real because it seemed too good to be true. But it is real...heart wrenching real. I applaud the author for telling this woman's story. Hopefully someone out there who has experienced something similar whether it be through sexual abuse, neglect or through abuse in the hospital or nursing home can gain some insight from reading this novel; many lessons can be learned whether the hero/heroine or villain.
